Defecting Grey / Mr. Evasion est un 45 tours des Pretty Things sorti en novembre 1967.
C’est leur premier disque sur le label Columbia Records, le groupe ayant signé un contrat avec EMI au mois de septembre. Est-ce que leur nouvelle maison de disques s’attendait à un collage psychédélique débordant de sitar et de fuzz ? Rien n’est moins sûr. En tout cas, les critiques sont franchement désarçonnés par ce virage enfumé. Certains, comme Penny Valentine, estiment que les Pretties l’ont bien négocié ; d’autres, comme Chris Welch, crient à la sortie de route. Quoi qu’il en soit, il ne leur permet pas de regagner les faveurs du public.

Critiques
The PRETTY THINGS very cleverly have managed to make the transition between blues and freak out. Now they come up with “Defecting Grey” which is a faintly ugly, clever thing, done in an extremely competent way (Columbia).

Good old Pretty Things! Right in the middle of the sitar, backward guitar, electronics and bits of tape sellotaped together, you can hear a rocking group bashing away. You have to put up with a bit in three four time, and some coy singing, then comes the blast. It’s all a terrible mess, but quite fun. It’s a pity groups ever discovered that word “progress.”

Change of sound and style for the group—not to mention a change of label. To be fair, I’m not entirely sold on this—and it could miss out. But I draw your attention to the mood-switching and the sheer power later on. Could either flop out; or click big. Flip: Pacey and well-worded.
