Love in Vain

C’est la deuxième reprise de Robert Johnson de l’album. La comparaison avec la version des Rolling Stones, sortie en 1969 sur Let It Bleed, est inévitable, et de l’aveu de Dick Taylor, le clin d’œil est volontaire, même s’il insiste : si Phil May et lui ont choisi d’en faire une nouvelle version, c’est d’abord parce qu’ils trouvaient que c’était une chanson de blues inhabituelle et brillante.

Ain’t No Grave

Ce gospel américain très connu a été repris par d’innombrables artistes. La version des Pretty Things doit sûrement quelque chose à celle de Johnny Cash, sortie en 2010 sur son album posthume American VI: Ain’t No Grave.

Faultline

Cette chanson du groupe de rock américain Black Rebel Motorcycle Club a vu le jour en 2005 sur Howl, leur troisième album.

Redemption Day

Cette chanson a vu le jour en 1996 sur le deuxième album de la chanteuse Sheryl Crow, simplement intitulé Sheryl Crow. La reprise des Pretty Things s’inspire clairement de celle enregistrée par Johnny Cash peu avant sa mort et sortie en 2010 sur son album posthume American VI: Ain’t No Grave.

I’m Ready

En guise de conclusion à cet ultime album, une reprise d’une composition de Willie Dixon popularisée par Muddy Waters en 1954. L’attitude défiante et crâneuse des paroles colle parfaitement à l’histoire des Pretty Things, c’est presque étonnant qu’ils ne l’aient pas reprise plus tôt. On pourrait aussi se demander si ce n’était pas à la Faucheuse que Phil May s’adressait en chantant « je suis prêt, je t’attends, j’espère que toi aussi t’es prête ».

Come Into My Kitchen

Aussi appelée Come On in My Kitchen, c’est l’une des compositions du légendaire Robert Johnson, enregistrée en novembre 1936. Les Pretty Things l’ont souvent jouée sur scène avant de la reprendre sur leur tout dernier album.

Can’t Be Satisfied

Cette chanson de Muddy Waters a vu le jour en single en juin 1948, même si son tout premier enregistrement a été réalisé par Alan Lomax en 1941. Les Pretty Things l’ont souvent jouée sur scène avant de l’inclure sur leur dernier album studio.

To Build a Wall

Cette chanson a d’abord vu le jour en 2016 sur Kingsdown Sundown, le quatrième album du chanteur de folk britannique Will Varley. Phil May en propose une interprétation très sobre et touchante, dédiée « à ses enfants » sur la pochette du disque.
